What is World vs World?
World vs World (WvW) is Guild Wars 2's large-scale, semi-persistent PvP mode. Three servers — called worlds or alliances in the Alliance era — are matched together for a full week of combat across four maps: Eternal Battlegrounds and three Borderlands. Hundreds of players simultaneously fight over castles, towers, and supply camps, accumulating Points Per Tick (PPT) that determine which world wins the match.
Unlike instanced PvP, WvW maps are always open. You can join mid-match, leave and return, swap characters, or move between maps freely. There is no MMR or per-account lockout — the entire server community contributes to a shared score. This makes WvW uniquely social: the bonds formed in the Mists are often the longest-lasting relationships in the game.
WvW also provides some of the most valuable progression rewards in all of Guild Wars 2 — including the Gift of Battle required for legendary weapons, exclusive Legendary Armour, the Conflux ring, and hundreds of hours of WvW Rank progression that unlocks permanent passive bonuses.
