WvW Gear Guide
1. WvW Gear Philosophy
WvW gear decisions differ fundamentally from PvE. In PvE, maximum DPS with glass-cannon builds is viable because enemy attacks are predictable. In WvW, you face other players who hit hard, interrupt, and burst unpredictably. Survivability matters.
The two most important principles for WvW gearing:
- You need to survive long enough to deal damage. A dead player contributes nothing. Hybrid or defensive stat lines often produce more total damage over a fight than pure offensive builds because they let you stay alive.
- Adapt your stats to your role. A front-line zerg fighter needs very different stats than a solo roamer or a heal support.
2. Exotic vs Ascended
The gear quality difference in WvW — and whether it is worth the grind — is a common new-player question.
| Tier | Stat Differential vs Exotic | Time Investment | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exotic | Baseline (0%) | Low — cheaply available on TP or crafted | Start here. Excellent for all WvW play. |
| Ascended | ~5% higher stats | High — weeks to months of crafting or WvW tickets | Long-term goal. Required only for infusion slots. |
| Legendary | Same as Ascended | Very High — months of WvW progression | Ideal end-game for flexibility (free stat swaps). |
A full exotic set in the right stats will beat an ascended set in the wrong stats. Gear up in exotic quickly, learn your role and the meta, then invest in ascended once you know exactly what stats and build you want long-term.
3. Key Stat Combinations
WvW has distinct meta stat options. Understanding what each does helps you pick the right build for your role.
| Stat Combo | Primary Stats | Role | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marauder | Power, Precision, Vitality, Ferocity | DPS | Best all-around offensive stat for WvW; adds Vitality for survivability over pure Berserker |
| Berserker | Power, Precision, Ferocity | Glass DPS | Maximum damage; risky in zerg but viable for experienced roamers |
| Celestial | All stats balanced | Hybrid | Very strong for condition-hybrid builds; popular for solo roaming; excellent self-sufficiency |
| Diviner | Power, Concentration, Precision, Ferocity | Boon Support | High Concentration = more boon duration; essential for Firebrand, Scrapper supports |
| Minstrel | Toughness, Healing Power, Vitality, Concentration | Heal Support | Dedicated healer stats; extremely tanky; pairs with Firebrand or Tempest |
| Harrier | Power, Healing Power, Concentration | Mid Support | Middle ground between offence and healing support |
| Trailblazer | Toughness, Condition Damage, Vitality, Expertise | Condi Roam | Excellent 1v1 durability with condition pressure; popular for solo roaming |
| Plaguedoctor | Vitality, Condition Damage, Healing Power, Concentration | Condi Hybrid | Tankier condition build; Scourge support favourite |
| Knight / Soldier | Toughness / Toughness+Vitality+Power | Tank | Very high survivability; used by point-cappers and some frontline fighters |
4. Gear by Role
Zerg DPS
Your goal is to add damage to your commander's pushes and cleanses. You are AoE-focused — you are not trying to kill one target but to contribute to wiping the enemy group through sustained or burst AoE.
- Recommended stats: Marauder (safest), Berserker (high risk/high reward)
- Priority: Stack with your zerg, don't outrun the tag, use AoE skills on clustered enemies
- Typical professions: Reaper, Dragonhunter, Deadeye, Scourge (power variant)
Zerg Support
Support players provide the boons that allow zerg DPS to function. Without Stability, your zerg gets chain-CCd. Without Quickness/Alacrity, your skills are slow. Without heals, players drop in AOE.
- Recommended stats: Diviner (boon support), Minstrel (heal support), Harrier (hybrid)
- Priority: Maintain Stability uptime, heal through spikes, provide Aegis before key pushes
- Typical professions: Firebrand (most common), Scrapper, Tempest, Druid
Roaming
Roamers operate alone or in very small groups (2–3). You need self-sufficiency — heals, escapes, sustained pressure, and the ability to disengage unfavourable fights.
- Recommended stats: Celestial, Trailblazer, Marauder depending on build
- Priority: Survivability first, pick fights you can win, know when to disengage
- Typical professions: Thief, Mesmer, Ranger (Soulbeast), Necromancer (Scourge)
Havoc / Small Group
Havoc groups (5–15 players) operate as mobile strike teams. Stats lean toward more offence than solo roaming since you have teammates covering support roles, but more defensive than full zerg glass.
- Recommended stats: Marauder, Celestial, or role-specific (Diviner for the group's one support slot)
- Priority: Coordination, quick objective captures, avoiding prolonged fights with larger groups
5. WvW Runes
Runes provide six-piece set bonuses that modify your playstyle significantly. WvW has no exclusive runes, but certain runes are far more common in WvW than PvE.
| Rune | Why it's Used | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Superior Rune of the Pack | Power, Precision, Swiftness on kill — good general offensive set | Power DPS, Zerg |
| Superior Rune of Speed | +66% Swiftness duration — movement in WvW is huge | Any role needing mobility |
| Superior Rune of the Citadel | WvW-specific boon-strip and power boost on enemy boon removal | Boon stripper |
| Superior Rune of the Soldier | Converts conditions to boons on shout; highly popular for Guardians | Zerg Firebrand |
| Superior Rune of Durability | +10% all stat boon duration; Protection and Regen at low health | Boon support |
| Superior Rune of the Afflicted | +25% condition duration; strong Vitality bonus | Condition roaming |
| Superior Rune of the Nightmare | Torment on critical hits; condition pressure | Condition builds |
6. WvW Sigils
Sigils slot into weapons and provide passive bonuses. Weapon-swapping can proc two sigils simultaneously, so pairing sigils is an important part of build optimisation.
| Sigil | Effect | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Sigil of Force | +5% damage | All power DPS builds |
| Sigil of Impact | +7% damage vs stunned/knocked-down foes | CC-heavy power builds |
| Sigil of Bloodlust | +10 Power per kill (stacking, up to 250) | Sustained combat, roaming |
| Sigil of Doom | Poison on weapon swap | Heal-denial, roaming |
| Sigil of Energy | +50% endurance on weapon swap | Any build — one of the best general sigils in WvW |
| Sigil of Agility | +1s Quickness + Swiftness on weapon swap | Boon-hungry builds |
| Sigil of Courage | +1s Aegis on kill | Tanky builds, frontline |
| Sigil of Geomancy | Bleed AoE on weapon swap | Condition zerg builds |
In WvW's sustained combat environment, having extra dodge endurance from Sigil of Energy almost always outperforms a pure offensive alternative. When in doubt, slot it.
7. Food & Utility
Food and utility consumables provide a meaningful stat boost even with inexpensive options. Never enter a serious WvW session ungelled.
| Budget Option | Boost | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Plate of Lemon Grass Poultry | +10% Boon Duration | Support |
| Bowl of Orrian Truffle and Meat Stew | +10% Damage when health > 90% | DPS |
| Plate of Pork Belly Roast | +100 Toughness, +10 Vitality/kill | Frontline tank |
| Fried Golden Dumpling | +100 Power, +70 Vitality | General DPS |
| Potent Superior Sharpening Stone (utility) | +3% Power/Precision, +6% Crit Damage | Power DPS |
| Bountiful Maintenance Oil (utility) | +10% Boon Duration, +10 Healing Power/boon | Support |
8. Infusions
Infusions slot into ascended/legendary gear and provide +5 to a chosen stat each. A full 18-infusion build adds 90 stat points — equivalent to roughly half a gear piece's secondary stat. Popular WvW infusion choices:
- +5 Power — for power builds
- +5 Toughness — for tanky frontline
- +5 Concentration — for boon support builds
- +5 Agony Resistance (WvW-purchased) — provides minor stat bonuses also
9. How to Obtain WvW Gear
